Project Summary: This study is an attempt by PM to understand more practically the issues around use of child labour in its targeted implementation areas1 spanning across different segments of the market system. In addition, PM is also seeking to understand those deeply rooted cultural norms, values obvious practices that engender child labour, and to seek plausible ways to reduce or realign these practices in a more meaningful and sustainable way. Additionally, PM is interested in the demarcations that exist between child labour and transfer of tacit knowledge (using international standards) among household members especially between adults and children. This is important knowing that PM intends to be implementing interventions across stable, conflict and post conflict areas within Northern Nigeria.

In addition, establish the impact of hidden fees on girl’s access to education in the states. The purpose is to understand the forms of hidden fees being paid by parents, and how much they cost, which will enable Gulmakai Network Nigeria to engage with key stakeholders on how to address the issue of hidden costs related to attending schools, which is one of the primary barriers preventing children from accessing their right to free basic education in the states.

Project Summary: The study sought to explore the cultural, social and economic issues faced by people living with disabilities that hinder participation within their communities, determine the coping strategies that PWDs have adopted in order to participate in their communities, explore difficulties and vulnerabilities that PWDs face in conflict and post-conflict areas, especially for marginalized groups such as women, children and the elderly, document experiences of PWDs within PM interventions, other developmental/external bodies, as well as the public sector in Northern Nigeria and explore ways of integrating PWDs within their wider communities and create linkages with those without disability.
This exploratory research was designed using a mix method approach to achieve the five (5) interrelated objectives of the research. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in a multi-dimensional way for both secondary reviews and primary data collection. The PWDs were actively involved in the research process such that the information gathered was co-produced by both PWDs and the research team. The research explored existing structures in the generation of sample frame for the research. These include; Disability Persons Organizations (DPOs), Social Welfare Departments of LGAs, District Heads (DHs), Ward Heads (WHs), and Religious Groups (RGs) across the study locations. The participants were adult men and women with disabilities. A multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted in drawing the study sample. All PWDs types2 completed the Washington Group Extended Set on Functioning (WG ES-F) questionnaire in order to establish eligibility and ascertain PWDs.

Thematic Area: Education & Child Development
Project Summary: This baseline report provided evidence and information on the barriers to the rights of education in Nigeria. The baseline is meant to support the design and implementation of an education project by Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) with support from Malala Fund, aimed at providing solutions to the low education enrolment for the girl child, high rate of school dropouts, and finally to ensure state governments take appropriate actions to promote free and quality basic education for all, especially for the girl child. The baseline provides information for three states- Kaduna, Kano and Bauchi states. The African Centre for Innovative Research and Development (AFRI-CIRD) used a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) approach to data collection.
The study adopted cross sectional survey design and focused on the eight (8) core objectives of the baseline assessment. A multi-faceted approach was adopted, and both primary and secondary data were used drawing from a mixed method approach. Both primary and junior secondary schools were targeted for data collection. This was in addition to state relevant authorities including Ministries of Education MOE), State Universal Basic Education Commissions (SUBEC) and Heads of basic education schools. Community actors were also targeted. These included Traditional and Religious leaders, Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and members of Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs). The respective stakeholders provided critical insights into the core objectives of the study and in addition provided guidance on the data collection strategy. 1,049 respondents were reached across all three states.

Thematic Area: Nutrition
Project Summary: This study is an attempt by PM to understand how the income gained by programme beneficiaries of its several interventions affects dietary choices among households. It also aims to understand the roles of both men and women (i.e. spouses, single and female-headed households etc.) in decision-making and control over how income is spent on food, types of food consumed and frequency of feeding amongst others. Findings from the study is expected to inform the planning and development of interventions as well as measurement of impact.
Methodologically, the study adopted an exploratory design approach. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were employed for the data collection. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted to draw study samples across the several interventions. A total of 2,227 responses were captured across study locations. The study data were processed and analyzed with the aid of SPSS and NVivo for quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Descriptive level of analysis was conducted in the results analysis. The report is currently being written.
